Regenerative medicine is the process of creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissue or organ function lost due to age, disease, damage, or congenital defects.  This field holds the promise of regenerating damaged tissues and organs in the body by stimulating previously irreparable organs to heal theirselves.

Umbilical Cord Blood (UCB) and Bone Marrow (BM) are main reservoirs of distinct stem cells to be used in reparative/regenerative therapies with the potential to treat:

  • Hematopoetic Stem Cells (HSC’s):  cancer patients after chemotherapy
  • Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC’s):  bone, cardiac, neurological diseases
  • Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPC’s):  ischemic tissues for new vessel growth

Present Use:  BM- and/or UCB- derived (hematopoietic) stem cells are used for reparative purposes (transplantation) after chemo- or radiation- therapy.

Diseases treated include: Leukemias, Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Hematopoietic and Plasma Cell Disorders, certain types of solid cancers and Inherited Metabolic/Immune Disorders.

Future prospects for the therapeutic use of adult UCB- or BM- derived stem cells, include blood, bone, cartilage, heart and a variety of neurologic diseases including spinal cord injuries.
